Covenant Mercies expands to Liberia – $50K matching gift challenge

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that, here in our 20th anniversary year, the Lord has given us the opportunity to expand our Orphan Sponsorship Program to Liberia, in west Africa. And to help us launch this new initiative in strength, a coalition of donors has come forward with a $50,000 matching challenge!

This means that every donation toward this project will be automatically doubled between now and the end of May 2022, up to $50,000. (Click here to make an online gift.)

How will the donations be used?

In addition to establishing our Sponsorship Program in Liberia, this project entails collaborating with our Liberian partners to develop the campus of GraceLife Academy, where our sponsored children will receive their education. In 2019, the leaders of GraceLife Church (led by Dyonah Thomas, pictured below) recognized quality education as one of the most intensely felt needs of their surrounding community. This led them to establish GraceLife Academy, erecting some modest structures on the church property to create classroom space. Since then, the school has acquired land (which Covenant Mercies recently expanded to almost 5 acres) for its permanent campus, just a 5-minute walk from the church premises. 

The team in Liberia is currently working with an engineering firm to develop a comprehensive site plan for GraceLife Academy’s campus, and through this $50,000 matching challenge we hope to raise the funds needed for Phase One.

GraceLife Church is situated just outside of Monrovia, Liberia’s capital city, which has endured its share of turmoil in recent history. In 2003, fourteen years of near-continuous civil war finally ended. Children returned to the classroom, in many cases needing rehabilitation after being drafted as child soldiers. Then, in 2014 came the Ebola outbreak with Liberia in its epicenter. Less than ten years after that, COVID-19 has dramatically affected us all.

One of the primary lessons we have learned through 20 years of ministry in sub-Saharan Africa is that quality Christian education is a key element to the success of our mission. Finding compatible partners like our friends at GraceLife is therefore an answer to prayer for us, and a tremendous opportunity.
