Catherine lost her father to HIV/AIDS in 2016, leaving her and her two siblings in the sole care of their mother, who has no source of income and provides for her family by working in other people’s gardens. Thankfully, Catherine is a healthy girl, and she has been able to remain in school. She is currently in second grade, and sponsorship with Covenant Mercies will allow her to enroll at Hope Community School.
Catherine lives in a village near Kiburara, Uganda. Runyankore and Rukiga are the main languages spoken in this area. Kiburara is also home to Hope Community School, established by Covenant Mercies in 2020.
